2015 Durga Puja Pandal Shivaji Park Mumbai images

As in past years, on the occasion of Dussehra festivities, the traditions of Durga puja can be seen in all its splendor at the Bengal Club's pandal at Shivaji Park, Mumbai.

The entrance is dominated by a huge sculptural creation of Lord Shiva with the Kailash moumtains forming the backdrop.

In front of Lord Shiva are the 9 incarnations of the Devi, each depicted traditionally seated on a mount.

What is the meaning and significance of 9 Navratri colours

Most of you are probably aware that Goddess Durga has 9 incarnations. These incarnations are worshipped during the 9 days and nights of the Navratri festival (nav meaning nine and ratri meaning night). A unique aspect of the worship is to dress the idol in a different colour on each day.

In recent years, it has become fun to dress up in a colour corresponding to the colour of the Devi’s garments. Did you know, though, that it is believed that each colour represents a particular guna (characteristic or quality) of the Devi?

In fact, colours, just like the mounts, are often associated with various Gods and Goddesses.

Why is Goddess Durga worshipped as Goddess Kali

Some images of Goddess Durga in Her form as Kali depict Her as having 10 heads. This symbolises Her powers as being effective in all 10 directions.

Goddess Kali’s numerous weapons signify that the Goddess is omnipotent and the demon the Goddess killed, namely Mahishasura, represents the triumph over ignorance.

Nine avatars of Goddess Durga

During the festival of Navratri, Goddess Durga is worshipped over the period of 9 days in her 9 different avatars (an avatar means the manifestation/form which a God/Goddess takes on earth).

It has been reported that this time the Dandiya Queen will be making a dramatic surprise entrance on each of the days. The 9-day utsav is being organised by Purple Stone Entertainment in collaboration with Mangal Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. & 3rd Rock Multimedia in Mumbai. For 2013 Falguni Pathak Navratri event tickets check details here.

The unique aspect of this year’s utsav will be free training sessions to help the participants learn the dandiya dance moves so that they can enjoy the festivities more.

Falguni Pathak is eager to focus more on devotional & celebratory themes for the songs & music beats and less on Bollywood numbers. So other than her own hit numbers of past years (remember Pari hoon main andYaad piya ki aane lagi ?) and Gujarati folk beats, there will be bhajans, aartis & Sufi songs for sure.

Gold jewellery for Goddess Durga idol

The idol of Goddess Durga is bedecked with gold jewellery at the onset of the 9 day Navratri festival, in much the same manner as the gold jewellery for the Gauri and Ganapati idols during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Five Navratri Festivals of the year
